NEW!  BEST POEM OF THE MONTH CORNER

These Hands

Written by Carol Roach

Copyright © 2006 by Carol Roach

These tiny hands of a 3 year old
reached into the cookie jar
only to be met with the cruel sting of her father's belt
his ranting and raving about stealing
she felt she would surely go to hell.

These young tender hands at 8 years old
fed and bathed a bedridden grandmother
never faltering always at her beck and call
idle hands were the work of the devil no doubt
these hands had no time to play at all.

The busy hands at 9 years old
took over the running of an entire family
scrubbed and polished, ironed and folded, cooked and baked
education, a useless venture for a girl
a wife and mother to be.

These strong hands of a 10 year old
placed a firm grip on the cuff of her father's shirt
dragged the dead weight of his drunken body
from the dirt after he had passed out
Family rituals take on strange routes.

These searching hands at 17
entered into marriage to rid her life of pain
she cooked and cleaned, and raised a family
he squandered his money on gambling and liquor
the saga was the same, nearly driving her insane.

These willing hands at 37
now lonely for a child welcomed a tiny baby, almost an orphan
into her modest, but loving home
the cycle of life yet to continue
with a new person added to the plan.

These callused hands well into their 40s
took in washing to make a living
scrubbed and polished, ironed and folded, cooked and baked
all for the love of that almost orphan child
the sacrifices she did make!

These loving hands of a lifetime
knew the harshness that life can bring
yet they tenderly nursed a sick baby
or mended a child's broken heart
these hands were a comfort from the start.

These tired hands at 64
were finally laid to rest
no longer would she have to toil and strive to do her best
the pain of life is behind her now, her joy has just begun
unfolding of His wondrous plans, God welcomes her with open hands.

PUBLISHER’S CORNER

Rosanne Catalano – www.rosannecatalano.net

This month there won’t be the usual salutation but I do welcome our new members and hope you are enjoying your free gifts! Thank you all for enabling this ezine to thrive, grow and be the success at helping people that I envisioned my magazine to be when creating it two years ago…

Summertime means many different things to different people. Some of us think barbecues, beaches, lazing in the sun with a good book and spending more time with our kids. For me it conjures up images of clear sunny skies, 70 or 75 degrees, no humidity, thunderstorms or clouds, and writing an inspiring story while gazing at the splash of colored gardens & trees as my ideal summer day. But when the weather and conditions aren’t perfect, the summer can be a hardship with flooding, tornadoes, other natural disasters and sometimes, as was the case for my family and I last year, worrying about loved ones sick in the hospital. Yet somehow we all get through it, even thriving in helping others who are not enjoying their summertime…

And helping others is what this ezine is all about! Which brings me to an article which has helped to snap me out of my depression and feeling of sleepwalking through the months after my stepdad and dad’s passing a year ago… I’m finally waking up so to speak. Living again feels so good! Though I love and still miss both my dads’, I know now what it truly means to live life in order to honor and celebrate their lives… I was half-dead this past year, just going through the motions of living. And I know this to be grief in the same form as the author, Dr. Mel Glazer’s, at the passing of his mother in his article titled “The Worst Thing about Loss.” I, too, felt the same. So his piece, published in our Articles section, has helped me as much as I hope our contributing author’s poems, stories and articles help you.

CONGRATULATIONS to Carol Roach for winning Best Poem of the Month, for her beautiful poem “These Hands!” Be sure to also read her stories titled “Forever in My Heart” and “My Guardian Angel” in our Coffee House 4 Poets & Writers Corner! Do let us know what you think of the Best Poem of the Month feature by writing a Letter to the Publisher…and thank you to those who have written in to us. We love hearing from you, so do keep those emails coming!

I finally wrote more on my blog, and will continue to do so! It can be read at http://thecatsmeowforwritersreaders.blogspot.com.  If you would like to leave a comment on there you must sign up. But it is FREE to do so and you don’t have to be a “blogger” to write in.

Also, my published articles on AssociatedContent.com can be read by clicking here and clicking here!

The first article is titled The Forgotten Child,” which is partly based on fact of an incident that happened in mine and my hubby’s former neighborhood, and deals with hope & kindness; the second article “Worst Date Ever!” is based on fact too and it tells of a bad date I went on over 20 years ago…the moral of the Worst Date Ever! is to have integrity when faced with an uncaring person. Stay tuned for upcoming articles on Associated Content…

I’m also pleased to announce an interview with Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein, a positive psychologist and happiness coach, which was conducted by “FiftyandFurthermore.com” and can be read on their website!

Dr. Barbara says: “I am happy to be sharing with you an interview I had with the editors of ‘FiftyandFurthermore.com.’ Please take a few minutes to read it on their website as it is really a chance for you to get to know me and THE ENCHANTED SELF. And I hope it will inspire you to write to me and let me know all about you! After all, there would not be an Enchanted Self without you! Happy Summer!” To read the interview with Dr. Barbara click here. You won’t be sorry you did!

CORRECTION for our July 2006 Ezine:

The author Usman (a.k.a. Duke Leo) Farouqi’s short story, titled “A Demons’ Night,” should have had the word “hostel” with an ‘s’ instead of “hotel” in the last two paragraphs of his story. Also, the apostrophe in the title should have been after the ‘s’ in Demons rather than after the ‘n.’  I regret these errors.

Now I’m giving the floor over to Nancy Currie, our editor, then to my wonderful authors and writers this month; some new, some established who have written poems, short stories and helpful informative articles for you. Also take a look at our new section “Letters to the Publisher”.

See you all next month … till then, enjoy what remains of the Summer and, as Nancy said in her column last month, don’t forget to get out in the sun in moderation!

EDITOR’S CORNER

Nancy Currie – webwriterworx.50webs.com/

A busy month indeed. July has passed and we’re almost half way through August. That means summer holidays are almost done and back to school is here. Hmm, back to school. There’s a concept I thought I left behind when I graduated many years ago. But do you know what? We never really leave learning behind, do we? I have been attending part time school since the year I graduated. Some classes were purely for interest sake; some were for higher learning recommended by my employer. All of it was worthwhile.

As I write this I am not registered in any formal education program for the first time in over 10 years. I am facing September without education enrolment. How strange. It’s actually very liberating. Don’t get me wrong. I love school. I love the opportunity to meet new people and learn new things. But this year I think I may take a break. I think I may pursue personal learning instead of formal education. I have often said that if I had the money I would dedicate more time to writing. As the old saying goes: Time is Money. And if I don’t go to school this September I will have more time. More time to write and more time to focus on selling my writing.

Wish me luck!

THE LENNON CODE?

Few people have heard of the novel The Gift of Gabe. A year ago even fewer people had heard of it. In these days of big budget mass marketing, books that are published by small publishers often have difficulty finding an audience. Without an advertising budget word of this book has been spreading. Early readers fascinated by the book's inclusive spirituality, told others. An internet forum for people who study Gnosticism picked up on the book last summer making it their topic of discussion for two months.

Some Beatles fans became interested after the reviewer for the online music magazine Ear Candy recommended it saying, "I was also fascinated by the interpretations of Beatles lyrics in the book, especially after having read about every book imaginable on Beatles song analysis."  Shortly after the review in Ear Candy, information about the book showed up on What Goes On, a website dedicated to Beatles news. Canadian readers with an interest in the paranormal picked up on the book after the author was interviewed on The X Zone Radio Show. There has been buzz about the book by Beatles fans in places as far apart as Israel, The Netherlands, Ireland, Finland, and Russia, places far removed from the book's northern New England setting.

The book is the story of meeting an eccentric old man who discusses his spiritual philosophy including the belief that people who have had certain experiences can communicate these experiences to each other in a symbolic language that is not readily understandable to most people. What most readers find fascinating is that many familiar songs are interwoven throughout the story and looked at in a way that is unique and thought provoking. A reviewer for Bookpleasures said, "Actually, it is primarily through Gabe's radical interpretations of the mentioned songs that one tends to become convinced of his perspective's veracity." Many of the songs are so familiar to people that the author was able to do this without directly quoting the lyrics. A reviewer for Mystic Living Today wrote, "There are many wonderful songs, book references, and passages throughout that are beautifully brought to life under the author's direct and interesting first person style."

While many readers seem to be focusing on the Beatles songs referenced in the book, songs by Jimi Hendrix and others are also referenced by the main character to help illustrate spiritual concepts. The volume of examples given and the interconnections between songs and artists have led many to conclude that there is truth in what the main character says. One of Gabe's claims is that during certain creative states some people can 'channel' the Universal Mind and be unaware that they are doing so. Gabe cites Plato and many others to support this concept. Purported examples are given including songs by Lennon, McCartney, and Harrison. Gabe believes that this experience is what some of the Sufi call shathiyat and what Joseph Campbell called transcendent poetry. What may be most controversial is Gabe's claim that this archetypical poetic experience is 'the speaking in tongues' of the early Christians. It is probably this concept that has appealed to readers who identify themselves as being 'new age'. Word of the book has shown up on websites like The Holistic Bulletin.

The reviewer for Mystic Living Today said, "I would recommend this book to anyone who likes an enlightened and spiritual read…" One of the things that differentiates The Gift of Gabe from other books in the visionary fiction genre is that it incorporates factual information and events in a way that is similar to historical fiction. Some readers have had a scholarly interest in the book seeing it as a modern myth that incorporates the philosophy of Aldous Huxley, Alan Watts, G.I. Gurdjieff, and others. While some are predicting that the book will become a countercultural classic, the book is clearly not for everyone. A reviewer for Round Table Reviews wrote, "The Gift of Gabe is well written, but the subject matter was too over the top for me."  The same reviewer still recommended the book for some saying, "Those with a strong interest in The Beatles and philosophy will be thrilled with Brian Joseph's novel."

INTRODUCTION BY VANCE AGEE, AUTHOR:

[ This introduction was also published by The Eagles Garden, Publishing Ministry – Deborah Lynn Haley, www.theeaglesgarden.com, Edited by:  President of The Eagles Garden, Gerald Neal Henderson, and Written by: Vance Agee ].

You just picked up this little book. Well, that’s obvious, at least to the people around you.

The question now is:  How long will you page through it and will you keep it?

Much of the earnings from the sale of my book will be given to a benefit fund for a wife and mom of three, who must have a double-lung transplant!  If you buy this book, you will help one of the many needs around us.

The best other incentive which I can offer you is that the book is not about someone rich and famous, but someone like YOU and ME; someone who grew up in a very modest or even poor home, but with a rich emotional, intellectual and character world; a world in which many family members could have walked right out of a Dickens’ novel; the world of a little boy with a great mind and spirit but very humble surroundings. Would you like to share all that and allow it to blend with your own life? (Hard to relate to rich and famous, even when you are rich and famous!).  If you do, you may email me at vgagee@adelphia.net and we can talk.  I’ll do my best to get back to you. But please include your email address, as this is the fastest way in which I can reply to you.

That is what this is all about:  Where Our Spirits Meet!

About what do I write?

About being a very young child (maybe 2 at the youngest!), about my mom and dad, about my grandma and grandpa, my goldfish, my first love at six, my favorite holidays, my sad times and the few happy times, about the mystery of the seasons, about my toy pets, school and church, later about junior high and high school, about college, and a little about the disappointments of later times. And about life in general. And time. And God.

Will you join me hand in hand or at least alongside one another?

Standing there, you are again at a crossroads of life. My goal is to be a help and a friend to you, in dark and light, in hope and despair, in dealing with both the good and the bad ghosts of life.  Allow our spirits to meet…

Vance Agee, author (Where Our Spirits Meet, 2006).

Please email Carol Roach at winterose@videotron.ca to order Vance Agee’s book, only $12.00 with shipping & handling!

BARBARA DEMING’S LATEST BOOK Growing up Barefoot in the South (Essays by a Southern Writer)”

AT BARNES & NOBLE & AMAZON.COM, OR RECEIVE AN AUTHOGRAPHED COPY FROM BARBARA!

She says about her book: “Those of you who know me well understand that this is a book dear to my heart. I always say that I am a Southerner first and an American second--those Southern roots go way, way back and are very deep despite the fact that I now live in California--well, at least it's Southern California. This book will carry you back to a time and place when life was simple, to small towns where the only rule of law was that everyone knew what you were doing--just the place for a tomboy who loved to get into mischief as well as climb mulberry trees to write.  Take a trip back to those ‘good old days’ where love for family, country and church were the values learned.”

Her book is available at:  http://www.amazon.com and http://www.barnesandnoble.com or you can obtain an autographed copy from the author at tejasbabs@aol.com.

MAHOGANY WRITINGS ANNOUNCES Caught in the Middle,” a novel by Cassandra Daniels is now available to purchase online through Lulu Press, Inc. Caught in the Middle is a novel that will reveal the greedy side that you didn't know you had.  Caught in the Middle allows you to take risks and explore the bad side with the help of Lulu Press, Inc., (www.lulu.com), the world's fastest-growing provider of print-on-demand books.

Caught in the Middle is about 21 year-old Lena Harper. She's an independent college student but her career of choice is being an escort. Her love of money drives and excites her and up to now, she hadn't had any problems with her lifestyle. She meets Rasheed Graham, an urban photographer and they become a couple. She never tells him about her job because she feels she can balance the two. One of her loves flips the script and has her feel like she's ‘caught in the middle’.

Cassandra Daniels wrote Caught in the Middle for the female college students who feel like money is everything and they have to do anything to get it. This book affects a woman who feels like she's caught in the middle between money and a man, family or friends. Caught in the Middle is available for purchase at www.lulu.com, in a marketplace filled with other matchless and wonderful surprises.

Caught in the Middle, illustrated as "it's hotter than a sunny day" will penetrate the reader's playful side. Love is beautiful, but also ugly, hurtful, and controlling. Caught in the Middle showcases all of that.

life situations throughout this story."
